Traveling With Pets

December 21, 2018 By //  by cnpadmin

Most of us view our pets as members of the family. It’s only natural to not want to leave them home when you travel. However, it’s important to plan in advance if you want to take your pet with you on vacation. The following tips can help.

Accommodations

One of the hardest parts of traveling with pets is finding pet-friendly accommodations. Fortunately, there are several hotels and motels that allow pets for a small fee. Vacation rentals are another option.

Make sure that you indicate that you’re traveling with pets when looking for a place to stay. It’s also important to follow all of the rules regarding the type and number of pets allowed. These rules are in place to protect property and future travelers. Failing to follow them could affect your ability to bring pets in the future.

Bring Special Foods and Medications

Most places you go will have places to buy pet food and other necessities. However, selection can be limited. If your pet is on a special diet or they take medication, you will need to bring these items with you on vacation. In fact, it might be a good idea to bring your pet’s food unless you are absolutely certain you can get it where you’re going. Switching your pet’s diet suddenly can upset their stomach. This can negatively affect your vacation.

Bring Important Paperwork

It’s a good idea to bring any important paperwork such as vaccination records and other veterinary information. You might need this information in the unfortunate event that your pet requires emergency care during your trip. These documents might also be required if you decide to have your pet groomed or placed in a boarding facility while traveling.

Bring Comforts of Home

Pets can become stressed when traveling. Providing them with familiar objects such as their bed, toys, leash, and/or dishes can help them feel more comfortable.

Claws N Paws offers pet grooming in Orange County, California. When traveling to the beach this holiday season, bring your pet in for some much needed pampering. We offer full service grooming for both dogs and cats. Please call 714-962-1005 for more information about our grooming services.

Halloween With Pets

September 21, 2018 By //  by cnpadmin

Many people love Halloween. However, their pets often do not feel the same way. In fact, Halloween can be extremely scary for pets that aren’t accustomed to the sights and smells of this fun night. It’s important to think of your pet long before the holiday.

Trick Or Treat

On Halloween night, you will likely have kids coming to your door over and over again. While you might enjoy seeing their costumes, your pet will probably be very upset by the constant ringing doorbell and opening of your door. It’s a good idea to keep your pet in a quiet room throughout the night. Try putting on a radio or television to distract them from the commotion at your front door.

If you decide to take your pet out with you to trick or treat, remember to keep them close. Your pet will not understand why people are dressed up. This can be scary and they might even become aggressive in an attempt to protect their family. Try visiting a few homes before deciding if your pet is able to continue.

Halloween Candy

One of the most common reasons that pets are brought to the hospital this time of year is because they’ve ingested something dangerous. Always keep candy away from your pet, regardless of how good you think they are.

It only takes a second for your pet to consume something that could cause a problem. Even if they don’t have access to chocolate, a candy wrapper can pose a serious choking hazard for your pet.

Keep Them Inside

There are numerous things on Halloween that can scare our pets. Startled pets might run from their family. Unfortunately, they can get lost easily. If at all possible, keep your pet indoors on Halloween night. Do not let them have access to your front door or allow them to play outside.

Many people have their pets boarded during this exciting holiday. This might be the best option if your pet becomes nervous easily or if you are unsure how they will react.

Claws N Paws Day Spa wishes you and your loved ones a safe and happy Halloween. Please call 714-962-1005 to schedule your next grooming appointment.

Spending New Year’s Eve With Your Pet

December 29, 2017 By //  by cnpadmin

Spending New Year’s Eve With Your Pet

New Year’s Eve can be scary for pets. The combination of large crowds, big parties and fireworks can cause a lot of stress and anxiety. Even if you avoid the crowds, pets can’t usually tell the difference between fireworks outside and on the television.

Fireworks and loud noises may startle pets and cause them to flee. More pets get lost during the holidays than any other time of the year. Keep your pet safe this New Year’s Eve with the following tips.

Update Identification Information

During parties, pets can escape through open doors. They may run when they hear loud noises. Before the holiday, make sure that you update the information on your pet’s identification. If you haven’t already, this might be an excellent time to have your pet micro chipped.

Make Sure Your Pet Gets Plenty of Exercise

Before New Year’s Eve, make sure that your pet gets plenty of exercise. This will hopefully help them sleep through the festivities. Take your dog for a long walk or spend some time playing with your cat.

Make Sure Your Pet Doesn’t Get Any Table Scraps

Table scraps can be dangerous for pets. Onions and garlic are toxic. Fatty foods can lead to life-threatening pancreatitis. Make sure that you keep food out of reach of pets. If you are having guests over for the holiday, let them know that your pets are not allowed to eat table scraps.

Drown Out the Sound of Fireworks

Fireworks, noisemakers and screaming neighbors can upset pets. If possible, play some white noise for your pet throughout the evening. Even classical music can help cover up outside noises.

Claws N Paws Day Spa offers dog and cat grooming in Orange County, California. We also offer cats-only boarding throughout the holidays. If you are concerned about your pets, boarding is an excellent option. Our boarding facility is specially designed to be quiet and comfortable. We offer condos for one or more cats. Preparing Your Pet For Boarding

November 24, 2017 By //  by cnpadmin

Preparing Your Pet For Boarding

A pet boarding facility is an excellent choice when traveling away from home. Boarding provides a safe, healthy environment for your pet. However, it can be extremely stressful to leave your pet in the care of someone else. A little preparation and a positive attitude can go a long way towards a positive boarding experience.

Preparation

Before dropping off your pet, make sure that you tour the boarding facility and talk to the people that will be caring for your pet. This will help you determine whether the facility is a good fit. Make sure that you ask questions about exercise, interactions with people and other pets, as well as any concerns you have about medications or special diets.

Prepare all of the necessary paperwork in advance. Have proof of vaccinations, medications, contact information and special diets ready for drop off. It might also be helpful to bring a special toy, a towel or blanket that smells like your home. A T-shirt worn by your pet’s favorite person can also help them feel more comfortable.

Drop Off

Your pet can tell when you are anxious. They will typically become upset as well. The best thing you can do for your pet is to remain calm during drop off. Showing your pet that you are happy and confidant will ensure the best chance of a success.

Pick Up

A smooth pick up is also important. Once you bring your pet back home, they will probably be sleepy. Pets are typically kept active during their time at the boarding facility. Offer plenty of fresh water and small meals until your pet’s energy returns. If at all possible, consider having your pet groomed before coming home.

Holiday Grooming

October 20, 2017 By //  by cnpadmin

Holiday Grooming

The holidays are quickly approaching. Many of us have begun preparing our homes and planning our holiday parties. This is an exciting time of year when we tend to focus on the little details. One of these details should be your pet.

Our pets bring us so much joy all year long. They are always there to provide us comfort and love. It can be easy to forget about our faithful companions during the hustle and bustle of this time of year. It’s important to remember that your pet is relying on you to take care of them this holiday season.

Basic Grooming

Longhaired pets require daily brushing. Make sure that you set aside a little time each day to care for your pet’s coat. This is an excellent time to bond with your pet and reassure them that they still have your attention.

When brushing your pet, make sure that you check them for fleas and ticks, which can still be present even throughout the winter in California. Check their skin for issues caused by dry indoor heating. Look for flaky skin and areas where your pet is scratching. If you notice anything unusual, it might be a good idea to contact your vet. Skin issues tend to escalate quickly.

Holiday Grooming Appointments

Your pet should visit their groomer at least once a month, regardless of how long or short their coat is. Regular bathing helps you spot skin issues that are common in the fall and winter. It also helps keep your pet’s skin and coat clean and healthy.

Regular grooming includes bathing, brushing, nail trims, ears cleaned and other necessary maintenance. Professional grooming is important for your pet’s overall health and well-being.

Holiday appointments book up extremely fast. It’s important to book your regular appointments well in advance. This ensures your pet won’t miss their regular grooming.

Holiday Guests

If you will be having guests staying with you this holiday season, it’s important to ensure your pets are well taken care of. Instruct guests, especially children, the proper way to care for your pet. Make sure they know not to feed them table scraps, which can be dangerous to their health.

If you have cats, you might want to consider having them boarded for the holiday season. Boarding ensures they are well taken care of and not let outside by well-meaning guests.

Claws N Paws Day Spa offers holiday grooming and cats only boarding. Please call 714-962-1919 for details.
