Managing Pet Hair in Your Home

November 13, 2020 By //  by Madison Scheafer

Animals shed. This is a fact every pet owner knows and understands. Unfortunately, pet hair can be annoying to manage. It gets everywhere, and it often means that friends with pet allergies cannot visit our homes. Thankfully, there are easy ways to manage shedding. This will ensure that you, your pet, and your guests are comfortable in your home.

The Root of the Problem

Pets shed normally, but excessive shedding may mean inadequate grooming. You can limit shedding by brushing your pet daily, bathing them often, and setting up a regular schedule with a professional groomer. These schedules all depend on your specific pet. For example, short-haired dogs need to be brushed less than long-hair dogs, and cats can manage with less frequent baths.

Excessive shedding may also signal certain health issues. A poor diet does not supply the proper nutrients for normal hair growth. To encourage healthy hair growth, invest in a food with high-quality proteins and fats. Even better, your pet’s coat will feel softer and stronger than ever! Past diet, shedding may be a symptom of a larger condition. Excessive shedding paired with itchiness, skin lesions, patchy hair loss, and other signs of illness should be monitored. Your vet can help you determine the root cause of shedding.

You can also curb shedding by putting your furry friend in clothes. Animals (especially most cats) find this controversial, but a tolerant pet will love a sweater or T-shirt. Not only will they look adorable, the fabric will catch a large percentage of fur.

Keeping It Clean

In most homes, it is unrealistic to expect pets will stay off the furniture. Instead, toss a blanket or a sheet over your pet’s favorite spot. They may even prefer this; it gives them something to cuddle with. Washing a blanket is much easier than cleaning a couch. If carpeted floors or rugs are your concern, vacuum cleaners are a great defense against loose fur. Certain brands produce vacuums designed specifically for cleaning pet messes. For clothing, curtains, and other fabrics, many pet owners find it helpful to have a lint roller handy.

Claws N Paws Day Spa provides a wide range of professional grooming services to both cats and dogs. Our dedicated team can work with you to determine your best grooming schedule to curb hair loss. For more information or to schedule an appointment, you can call us today at 714-962-1005!

Houseplants and Your Cat

October 12, 2020 By //  by Madison Scheafer

Adding plants to your home can be a magical experience. Not only are plants beautiful, but they purify your indoor air, making it much easier to breathe inside your home. Unfortunately, many cat owners are reluctant to add plants to their home. Our feline friends often make it more challenging to maintain other living things. Thankfully, there are many ways to safely introduce plants into a cat-friendly home!

Cat-Friendly Houseplants

Preferably, our cats would not chew on our plants, but oftentimes cats will chew on or eat anything they please. Many common houseplants are actually toxic to cats, so chewing can have major consequences. Fortunately, there are a number of houseplants that are non-toxic to cats.

Green, leafy plants are one of the most common additions to the modern home. While common plants like golden pothos and branching ivy are toxic, there are many safe plants that you and your pet can enjoy. Consider ferns such as the Boston or Kimberly Queen, or palms such as Bamboo, Parlor, or Ponytail. If you’re looking for low-maintenance yet beautiful green plants, you can find the non-toxic spider plants or rattlesnake plants at your local grocery store.

Many people like succulents, but pet owners must steer clear from jade and aloe. Instead, succulents such as Echeveria and Hawthoria Zebra are great non-toxic alternatives. Most cacti are also safe for cats, but be careful with these. Many cacti (and even succulents) have spines which can get stuck in your cat’s fur or skin.

Flowers are always a beautiful addition! In a house with cats, opt for orchids, sunflowers, or roses. Many common flowers are toxic, including lilies, daisies, and begonias. Keep any bouquets with these flowers far out of your pets’ reach.

Other than looking pretty, many cat-friendly plants are actually functional! You can grow herbs like basil and thyme without worry. These plants will happily sit in the window alongside your cat. Furthermore, if you have a problem with flies or gnats, you can find some help in a Venus fly trap! These carnivorous plants are completely cat-safe. Contrary to popular belief, it is not safe to grow catnip in your home. While cats may enjoy little bits of dried catnip in their toys, they can easily overdose on fresh catnip.

Placement is Everything!

While your houseplants may be safe, cats are not meant to eat plants. For your carnivorous cat, eating too many greens can cause severe vomiting and/or diarrhea. The best way to avoid this is to put houseplants far out of reach. Invest in some hanging planters! If you choose to place plants on high shelves, make sure your cat cannot get up there. You want to be sure they cannot knock over the plant, scattering vase or pot shards across the floor. Make sure your cat has many other perch spots so they will not be tempted to snuggle up to your plants. And be forgiving! Your plants will survive some cat scratches, just like you.

At Claws N Paws, your pet’s needs are always our first priority. You can find professional grooming services for both cats and dogs at our day spa, or devoted boarding services at our cats-only facility right next door. Choosing the Best Dog Food

July 24, 2020 By //  by Madison Scheafer

A trip to the pet store can be daunting for new dog parents. Some days, the dog food aisle seems to stretch for miles. Among all of the cans and bags, you know the perfect food is somewhere—but where? Luckily, there are ways to narrow down the process.

The Canine Diet

A good dog food attempts to mimic the natural canine diet. Many people believe that dogs eat only meat, but this is not entirely true. Unlike cats, dogs are not strict carnivores. The domestic canine diet consists of primarily meat, but also fruits, vegetables, and grains. These other ingredients contain essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

Your dog may also have specific needs. Puppies, new mothers, and highly-active dogs require more calories than most. Alternatively, older or less active dogs require less calories. This affects not only the type of food you choose but also the amount you feed to them. If your dog has any health concerns, they may require a specific food formulated for their conditions. Talk to your veterinarian if you think your dog needs a more “scientific” diet.

Uncomfortable with Labels?

Every dog food claims to be “the best dog food out there.” Knowing how to properly read a dog food label is an important skill for every dog owner. Always look at the ingredients list. The first two or three ingredients should be meat-based. Avoid dog foods with high amounts of wheat, corn, and soy fillers. Not only are these common allergens, these fillers may contribute to poor health and obesity later down the line. Finally, avoid any food with excessive chemical preservatives.

Try, Try Again

Unfortunately, dogs can be difficult to feed. At one point or another, you will likely choose a food that your dog dislikes. When trying a new food, look out for any adverse symptoms such as excessive licking of the paws or gastrointestinal problems. These symptoms point to a food allergy and may benefit from medical diagnosis. Alternatively, your dog may simply dislike the taste or texture of their food. They may refuse to eat. In either case, you will need to start the process over again.

Claws N Paws Day Spa in Fountain Valley, California provides professional grooming services to both cats and dogs. Right next door, Claws N Paws offers cat boarding in our cats-only facility. For more information or to make an appointment, call us at 714-962-1005.

Litter Box Training Your Cat

May 8, 2020 By //  by Madison Scheafer

Cats are known for being clean animals. However, unlike with self-grooming, they are not born knowing how to use a litter box. Luckily, litter box training can be surprisingly easy. Follow these tips for a successful and easy process.

The Best Box

Make sure your cat can get in and out of their box comfortably. Kittens cannot climb into tall boxes, and short boxes may feel cramped for larger kitties. You will need many different litter boxes throughout your cat’s life. Most cats and owners prefer a box with a hood. They provide extra privacy for your cat, and they confine unwanted odors.

Pick a Good Spot for the Box

It is important to put your cat’s litter box in an optimal spot. If they dislike the spot, they will not use the box. Like humans, most cats like privacy for their restroom needs. Pick a place that humans or other animals rarely visit, such as the laundry room or a secluded bathroom. Ensure that your cat has access to their box at all times; you never know when they will need it. If you have more than one cat, strive to have one box for every cat, plus one. It is best for them to have options, especially when starting out.

Litter Box Upkeep

The best cat litter depends on your cat’s specific needs. Clumping litter, though often more expensive than granulated, conceals more odor and is easier to clean. Many cats dislike scented litter, but it can mask what many owners lovingly call the “cat smell.” Oftentimes, choosing a litter is a trial and error process. If your cat is refusing to use their box, you may want to try a new type of litter.

Because cats are so clean, they will not use a dirty box. You should scoop litter boxes once or twice a week, switching out the litter about once a week. Plastic litter boxes do not last forever; once they start to smell (despite regular scooping and cleaning), you should replace them. Your cat (and your nose) will thank you.

Be Patient

While cats are very clean, they are also very stubborn. Don’t get too disheartened if your cat is not using their box. Keep switching their box’s location and litter type as needed. Stressed cats are less likely to use a box. If your cat is consistently pottying outside of their box or their urine/feces looks abnormal, contact your vet.

Exercising With Your Dog at Home

May 1, 2020 By //  by Madison Scheafer

If you have a dog, you are probably used to exercising outside. However, in the time of COVID-19, that allotted daily walk may not feel like enough. You have probably noticed that, come midday, you and your dog have far more energy than usual. Luckily, there are many ways to observe social distancing and get a great workout for both you and your furry friend.

Using Your Space

Certain features of your house may lend themselves to exercise. For example, stairs can be a great workout! Put your dog on their leash and take them up and down the stairs. This can be an intense workout, so make sure you and your dog are both equipped for the task. Don’t go too fast, and make sure your stairs are not too slippery (carpeted stairs are best).

If you have a backyard, now is the perfect time to use it! You can play the usual games—like fetch, tug of war, etc.—or try something new! Blow some bubbles and watch your dog chase them. Play some loud music and dance around with your pup. Bury treats in the dirt and encourage them to dig (this one can be quite messy, but rewarding). If you have a pool, you and your dog can swim together. This is a great exercise for both of you; just make sure your dog is safe, comfortable, and supervised at all times. Especially small dogs (such as puppies) can even swim in the bathtub.

Thinking Outside the Box

If your home does not have these features, don’t worry! There are still plenty of ways to exercise with your pup. Grab your dog’s favorite toy and play tug of war. Not only does this game take up very little space, it is a great way to have fun and exercise your arms. Many owners also find dog yoga a fun way to exercise and relax. All it takes is doing yoga in the same room as your pup—chances are, they will join in!

There are also ways to spice your daily walk. Instead of strolling, try running or cycling with your dog. Taking a quicker pace will tire your furry friend out, and you will get a great exercise in the meantime! Always make sure your dog is up for the challenge before taking on a more strenuous routine.

At Claws N Paws Day Spa, you and your pet’s needs are always our first priority. Our full-service grooming facility and cats-only boarding facility are currently closed due to the COVID-19 lockdown, but we look forward to safe and comfortable reopening. How to Keep Your Indoor Cat Happy

April 17, 2020 By //  by Madison Scheafer

You have heard it all before: cats are free spirits, and they like to come and go as they please. However, every day the outside world becomes more dangerous for domestic cats. Not only are indoor cats safer than outdoor cats, they can even lead happier lives.

Why Cats Should Be Indoors

The outside world poses many threats to your feline companion. Roads are the most obvious danger; each year, more cats are killed by cars than are euthanized in United States animal shelters. Outdoor cats are more likely to contract diseases from other cats or animals. Furthermore, coyotes, large birds, or dogs often prey on domestic cats. These represent just some of the dangers to cats that lie beyond your front door.

A Feline Lifestyle (in a Human Household)

Cats thrive surprisingly well in human households; that’s why they make such great pets! Still, there are many ways you can make the experience better for them.

Indoor cats need just as much exercise as outdoor cats. This where toys come in. You can find great cat toys online such as wands and puzzle toys, but cats will play with just about anything. Paper bags and cardboard boxes make great toys; get creative! If your cat still seems energetic, consider buying them a cat-safe leash. Some cats love to go on daily walks, just like dogs!

There are many ways to organize a home with cats in mind. If you have limited space, you can open it up with kitty condos or cat trees. Cats enjoy feeling the sun, so place any pet beds or cat trees near the windows. Some newly-indoor cats may even enjoy a patch of cat grass to lie in. Like with the toys, this a perfect way to get creative and discover what works best for you and your feline friend!

Outsmarting the Escape Artists

Even indoor cats may try to escape every once in a while. Cats are curious, after all. Make sure to always close your windows and doors. Just in case your cat does get outside, give them up-to-date identification such as a collar or microchip. That way, anyone who comes across your cat can contact you directly.

You can lower the chance of possible escapes by getting your cat spayed or neutered. Pheromones released during mating season can draw an unfixed cat outdoors. Fixed cats also tend to be more docile and thus less likely to make such a spontaneous decision.

Claws N Paws Day Spa owns and operates a full-service grooming salon, as well as a cats-only boarding facility right next door.
