Celebrating the New Year With Your Pet

December 28, 2018 By //  by cnpadmin

It’s hard to believe that another year has come and gone. If you’re like many Orange County residents, you’ll be celebrating the New Year surrounded by friends and family. If you’ve chosen to enjoy this holiday at home, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

Keep Your Pet Safe and Comfortable

As much as you might want to include your pet, they probably won’t appreciate the sights and sounds of the celebration. In fact, it might be a good idea to consider boarding them for the evening. The right boarding facility will keep them safe and reduce the amount of exposure your pet has to the loud noises that are commonly present this time of year.

If you choose to keep your pet at home, make sure that they are comfortable. Playing soft music or leaving the television on can provide a welcome escape from the fireworks and other sounds of the celebration. It’s also important to make sure your pet cannot get outside. When pets become startled, they run. This creates a safety hazard for themselves and others if they run into traffic. If they run too far, they might not find their way home. This is why it’s so important that you make sure your pet cannot get outside.

If you are having guests over to celebrate the New Year, make sure they know not to leave doors open and not to let your pet outside. It might be a better idea to keep your pet in a safe, quiet room instead of allowing them to join your party. This is safer for your pet and they might appreciate it more, especially if they are nervous around new people.

Some pets enjoy being the center of attention. If this sounds like your pet, you might want to let them join the party. Just make sure that your guests know not to feed them any table scraps. Party foods are often loaded with fat and sugar. They might also contain ingredients that are toxic for your pet. The best way to avoid upset stomach and other issues is to make sure they don’t get anything they aren’t supposed to eat.

Claws N Paws Day Spa hopes that you and your loved ones have a Happy New Year!

Choosing a Groomer

October 5, 2018 By //  by cnpadmin

All pets require grooming every now and then. This is true for even shorthaired breeds. Without regular baths, dogs can develop skin conditions and become incredibly dirty (and smelly).

Dogs should be bathed every four to six weeks. Longhaired breeds should be groomed more frequently to prevent mats and tangles from forming. Shorthaired cats do not require grooming as often. In fact, some might not need to be groomed at all unless they get into something sticky. Longhaired cats can become matted just like longhaired dogs and should be groomed regularly.

Choosing a groomer can be difficult. Orange County residents have many options when it comes to grooming salons. While most people assume that big box stores such as PetsMart and Petco are the best choice, this isn’t always the case. Inexperienced groomers often run the grooming salons in big box stores. While training is offered, it’s brief and does not cover several important issues about safety and proper grooming technique. In fact, these shops often end up in the news when inexperienced groomers mishandle or unintentionally harm the pets left in their care.

Kitten Adoptions

September 28, 2018 By //  by cnpadmin

Claws N Paws Day Spa has been caring for pets in Orange County, California for sixteen years. While many people already know about our pet grooming services, not everyone knows that we also have several rescued cats and kittens available for adoption. These sweet felines are eagerly waiting for someone to give them a chance at a happy life.

We Take Donations!

Many of the kittens we have available for adoption were found as newborns. These kittens have to be bottle-fed and socialized before they are able to find a new home. This takes a lot of time and effort. It also costs a lot of money.

Kitten formula is expensive. So is the veterinary care and medicine these babies often need. This is the reason we ask for donations whenever possible. The money we collect for our rescue does not go back into our grooming shop. Every cash donation goes directly towards caring for our foster cats and kittens.

If at all possible, please consider donating to our rescue. In addition to money, we also accept towels, blankets, formula, cat and kitten food, and litter donations.

Adopt, Don’t Shop

Kittens in pet stores usually come from puppy mills, or commercial breeders. These breeders see the animals in their care as profit makers. They generally do not provide the attention or medical care required to raise happy, healthy pets. As a result, pets from pet stores are often sick or badly behaved. Purchasing animals from a pet shop allows this type of breeding situation to continue. If you are looking for a cat or kitten, please consider adoption.

All of the cats and kittens we have available for adoption are healthy, up-to-date with their vaccinations, spayed or neutered (when old enough), and socialized with people and other pets. Our bottle-fed babies are some of the sweetest kittens you’ll ever meet.

Stop by our grooming salon in Fountain Valley, California to meet our available cats and kittens. Each has its own unique personality. Our groomers will be happy to help you find the perfect fit for your family. Please call 714-962-1005 for more information about our cat and kitten rescue.

Halloween With Pets

September 21, 2018 By //  by cnpadmin

Many people love Halloween. However, their pets often do not feel the same way. In fact, Halloween can be extremely scary for pets that aren’t accustomed to the sights and smells of this fun night. It’s important to think of your pet long before the holiday.

Trick Or Treat

On Halloween night, you will likely have kids coming to your door over and over again. While you might enjoy seeing their costumes, your pet will probably be very upset by the constant ringing doorbell and opening of your door. It’s a good idea to keep your pet in a quiet room throughout the night. Try putting on a radio or television to distract them from the commotion at your front door.

If you decide to take your pet out with you to trick or treat, remember to keep them close. Your pet will not understand why people are dressed up. This can be scary and they might even become aggressive in an attempt to protect their family. Try visiting a few homes before deciding if your pet is able to continue.

Halloween Candy

One of the most common reasons that pets are brought to the hospital this time of year is because they’ve ingested something dangerous. Always keep candy away from your pet, regardless of how good you think they are.

It only takes a second for your pet to consume something that could cause a problem. Even if they don’t have access to chocolate, a candy wrapper can pose a serious choking hazard for your pet.

Keep Them Inside

There are numerous things on Halloween that can scare our pets. Startled pets might run from their family. Unfortunately, they can get lost easily. If at all possible, keep your pet indoors on Halloween night. Do not let them have access to your front door or allow them to play outside.

Many people have their pets boarded during this exciting holiday. This might be the best option if your pet becomes nervous easily or if you are unsure how they will react.

Claws N Paws Day Spa wishes you and your loved ones a safe and happy Halloween. Please call 714-962-1005 to schedule your next grooming appointment.

Does Your Pet Need a Summer Haircut?

July 6, 2018 By //  by cnpadmin

Does Your Pet Need a Summer Haircut?

As we move further into summer, you’ve probably wondered if your pet needs a haircut. Most of us couldn’t imagine wearing a thick fur coat all summer long. However, your pet’s coat might actually be keeping them cool.

A pet’s coat works differently than the hair on our heads. Their fur is designed by nature to keep your pet warm in the winter and cool in the summer. By shaving your pet’s fur, you actually limit their natural ability to regulate their body temperature. This is especially true for cats.

Exceptionally Thick Coats

There are certain breeds of dog that are bred to have thicker fur than nature intended. If your dog appears to be suffering as temperatures rise, it might be a good idea to give them a haircut. Just make sure that you leave at least one inch of fur to protect them from sunburn. Also, if your pet is matted, it’s important to have the mats removed as soon as possible. Mats are painful and can lead to infection and other problems if not promptly removed.

Hot Spots and Skin Conditions

The other reason you might want to consider having your pet trimmed down in the summer is if they are prone to hot spots and other skin conditions. Removing the fur around hot spots enables easy application of medication. It also allows the air to reach sore skin, speeding up the healing process.

Make sure that you speak with your veterinarian before having your dog shaved if it has a skin condition. Sometimes, shaving the fur can irritate sores and make skin conditions worse.

Shorthaired Dogs

Shaving a shorthaired dog will not stop them from shedding. Instead, the fur they shed will be shorter, and act like little splinters; sticking into everything it comes in contact with, including your skin. Shaving a shorthaired dog also increases the chance of sunburn and skin irritation. A monthly bath and blow dry is typically all a shorthaired dog needs during the summer.

Claws N Paws Day Spa offers dog and cat grooming in Orange County, California. Please call 714-962-1005 to set up a grooming appointment today.

Fun Places to Visit With Your Dog This Spring

April 6, 2018 By //  by cnpadmin

Fun Places to Visit With Your Dog This Spring

Spring is officially here in Southern California. This means warmer weather and longer days. It also means spending more time outdoors with your dog. Be sure to check out the following dog-friendly spots this spring:

Dog Beach

In case you weren’t already aware, dog beach is located in Huntington Beach. This beach allows you to enjoy the surf with your pet. Your dog is sure to enjoy digging in the sand and playing in the water. Although dogs are allowed at dog beach, it’s still a good idea to bring a leash. Not every dog that visits is used to being around other dogs. It’s also important to remember to clean up after your pet.

Mile Square Park

Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley features lots of trails to explore. You and your dog are sure to enjoy seeing turtles, geese, ducks, and other dogs. There’s plenty of room to throw Frisbees and play catch. This is a large park with lots to do. Take a picnic lunch and make a day out of it.

Park Bench Café

The Park Bench Café is located in Huntington Central Park. This dog-friendly café offers plenty of treats for you and your furry friend.

Fashion Island

If you’re in the mood for some shopping, make sure you bring your dog to Fashion Island in Newport Beach. This dog-friendly mall features a number of shops to explore. Most of the shops allow you to bring your dog in on a leash, and a few even have doggie mascots of their own.

Costa Mesa Bark Park

The Costa Mesa Bark Park offers dogs plenty of room to run, play, and meet other dogs. This provides the perfect opportunity to let your dog roam free while you meet other like-minded pet parents in the area.

After exploring Orange County with your dog, make sure that you stop by Claws N Paws Day Spa for a bath. We can help rid your pet of that pesky sand from dog beach or dirt buildup from playing at the park. Please call 714-962-1005 to schedule a grooming appointment.
