Thanksgiving Safety for Pets

November 8, 2019 By //  by cnpadmin

With November upon us, Thanksgiving is just around the corner. ‘Tis the season to express gratitude to our loved ones, including our pets! Show them a wonderful holiday this Turkey Day.

Be Careful About Food Scraps

Thanksgiving dinner is well worth the year’s wait. Unfortunately, most of the traditional Thanksgiving dishes contain ingredients that can be dangerous for your pet. It is well-known that pets are not meant to consume common toxins like chocolate and xylitol sweetener, but there are many other foods that can make your dog or cat very ill. Anything cooked with onions, scallions, or garlic is toxic to dogs and cats. This likely includes turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and more. Furthermore, dairy products can cause serious stomach upset; lactose intolerance is common in dogs and cats and is not detected until after a problem has occurred. Salads made with grapes or raisins can cause kidney damage to dogs. Even meats like unseasoned turkey and ham can create digestive problems, particularly if they contain bones. As a result, it is best to avoid giving anything from the Thanksgiving table to your pet.

Some pets are curious and will attempt to sneak food. You can take it as a compliment to your cooking, but do not let them consume it. Due to the severity of these ingredients, we recommend keeping your pet out of the room during prep, feasting, and clean-up. Remember to take out the trash before letting them back into the room.

Traveling

If you are traveling for Thanksgiving, make sure you have made accommodations for your pet. If they will be flying with you, make sure to read up on airline rules and safety. Update any tags or microchips to ensure that all information is up to date.

If your pet is staying home, they will still need accommodations. Arrange for someone to watch them, or find a boarding facility. Those located near Orange County, California can find professional cats-only boarding at Claws N Paws. Contact us at 714-962-1005 for more information.

Hosting Guests

You may have taken on the brave task of hosting Thanksgiving dinner at your home. Your pet might love the extra attention, but make sure the environment is safe and comfortable. Monitor the door (and alert your guests of any pets in the home) to make sure there are no runaways. Supervise any children, particularly those who have not been exposed to many animals. Keep in mind that it may be ultimately safer to keep your pet in a separate room from guests.

Claws N Paws Day Spa owns and operates a full-service professional grooming salon in Fountain Valley, California. Right next door is our cats-only boarding facility, perfect for the holidays. Stop by today for more information!

Introducing a Cat Into a Home With Children

November 1, 2019 By //  by Madison Scheafer

Spending time with animals is invaluable to your child’s development. They can learn emotional skills ranging from empathy and compassion to responsibility and care. However, the transition to having animals can be a bit tricky. Many parents are nervous to introduce new animals into their homes for this reason. Follow these tips to help ensure a safe and comfortable transition for you, your children, and your new feline friend.

Why Cats?

Cats are quite like toddlers themselves; they love to play, eat, and sleep. Dogs require more involved care that takes them away from the home, such as walks and potty breaks. Cats, on the other hand, stay in the home, making it easier for young children to take on some responsibility for them.

However, it is important to note that (also like children) cats can be temperamental. This can teach children lessons about discipline and gentleness, but parental guidance is always necessary.

Kittens vs. Adult Cats

Kittens will learn and grow with your children, and they can be in your family for up to about twenty years. New pet owners usually choose to adopt kittens for this reason. However, kittens are much more likely to be temperamental than adult cats. They are growing into their personalities and may experience hormonal phases such as biting and overt playfulness. Children may find themselves afraid of a kitten’s unpredictability. Furthermore, kittens are smaller and thus more fragile. You as a parent will need to take extra care with a kitten, perhaps limiting their access to young children.

Adult cats, on the other hand, have already done their growing. They are the much safer option, as they are larger and less likely to act unpredictably. As a result, adult cats require less attention and can usually spend long periods of time with children. However, some parents are hesitant to adopt a cat they know they will have less time with. The cat has already been socialized a certain way, and so acclamation may be somewhat more difficult.

The best cat for one home may not be the best cat for yours. Always meet an animal before you decide to adopt.

Your Role as Parent and Pet Owner

As mentioned before, parental guidance is of the utmost importance in ensuring a positive transition. Speak to your children before bringing home any animals. They should demonstrate relatively calm demeanor and compassion. When selecting a cat, involve your children in the process. Bring them along to meet any potential adoptees. This will make them feel important and start early kinship between cat and child.

Kids can learn valuable skills such as feeding and cleaning up after a new pet. If you are giving your child any responsibilities, understand that you are ultimately in charge of the animal. Children can learn discipline from taking care of an animal, but your cat should not suffer as a result.

Get The Best Out of Your Grooming Appointment

September 27, 2019 By //  by Madison Scheafer

A trip to the grooming salon is a necessary experience to having a pet, but many first-time pet owners may feel intimidated by the process. In truth, a grooming appointment is nothing to stress about, and it leaves your pet happy and clean. Here are some tips to ensure that you and your pet will get the very best out of the salon experience.

Warming Up

Practicing good coat health at home can have real benefits at the grooming salon. Brush your pet regularly to decrease the chance that they will have mats. If your groomer finds mats, they will have no choice but to shave them. However, keep in mind that mats often start close to the skin. Groomers recommend brushing down to the skin every time. Frequency depends on your pet. Dogs and cats with shorter coats only require brushing twice a week. Meanwhile, pets with longer coats should be brushed either every night or every other night.

You can also practice regular grooming techniques such as clipping your pet’s nails and brushing their teeth. Not only do these improve their physical health, it normalizes the grooming process. A pet who is exposed to these procedures is more likely to feel comfortable at the salon.

Know Your Pet’s Needs

Every pet is unique! Professional pet groomers are equipped to handle a wide variety of conditions and behaviors. However, it always helps when they know what to expect. Does your pet have any allergies or medical conditions? Any behavioral concerns such as aggression or fear of loud noises? These are all good questions to consider prior to a grooming appointment. It will help ensure a positive and stress-free experience for you, your pet, and your groomer.

Bathroom Break!

Many pets soil themselves during or after being groomed, which can add time or extra expenses to your visit. Therefore, it is always a good idea to let your pet do their business before a grooming appointment.

Schedule Regular Appointments

Unfortunately, the effects of a grooming fade over time. Your pet’s coat is constantly growing, and they are experiencing life in all its messiest ways. Scheduling regular appointments with a trusted groomer is a good way to keep your pet looking and feeling great. Plus, becoming a “regular” has its own benefits. Your groomer will learn your pet’s specificities, and your pet may very well make a new friend that they look forward to seeing. Talk to your groomer about how often to schedule appointments; this will vary based on a number of factors.

You can find a comfortable and professional grooming experience at Claws N Paws Day Spa. Located in Fountain Valley, California, our staff is extremely dedicated to making sure your pet has the best possible experience every time they come in. Stop by our location or call 714-962-1005 to make an appointment.

How Pumpkin Can Help Your Cat or Dog

September 20, 2019 By //  by Madison Scheafer

With fall just around the corner, pumpkin is everywhere. You can find almost anything flavored or scented with pumpkin. This year, consider including your pet in the fun. Pumpkin has several hidden health benefits for your furry friend that will persist past the autumnal trend.

Health Benefits

Pumpkin contains both insoluble and soluble fiber. Insoluble fiber helps constipation by drawing water into the GI tract and softening stool. Meanwhile, soluble fiber helps diarrhea by draining excess water out of the GI tract when there is too much. This delicate balance works to regulate an otherwise healthy animal’s bowel movements. For this reason, many pet owners turn to pumpkin for weight management.

In addition to fiber, pumpkin contains many other nutrients that will leave your pet feeling fantastic. Vitamins A and C build immune system health and support vision. Zinc promotes healthy skin and coat. Cucurbitacin has been known to fight intestinal parasites.

While other foods may contain the same nutrients, many pet owners choose pumpkin. This is because its taste and texture are more palatable to even the pickiest of pets. In some cases, mixing pumpkin into a new food can motivate a fussy eater to try it. That being said, some pets have different taste. Not every pet will enjoy pumpkin as a meal supplement.

Introducing Pumpkin to Your Pet’s Diet

Pets can eat canned or fresh pumpkin. Do not give them pumpkin pie filling or anything with added sugars. For cats, start with a single teaspoon and increase as needed. For dogs, do the same with a tablespoon. The issue at hand is also important; constipation requires more pumpkin than diarrheal problems.

Not An End-All Solution

Although a tasty and healthy treat, pumpkin will do little for a sick pet. It is not a “cure” so much as a relief to troublesome symptoms. Monitor your pet’s health and behavior. Diarrhea accompanied by weight loss or dehydration is likely a symptom of something more serious.

Additionally, pumpkin cannot be used as a meal replacement. Dogs and cats cannot survive without meat in their diet.

Does My Dog Have a Food Allergy?

September 13, 2019 By //  by Madison Scheafer

We all want to give our dogs the best possible food. However, this can be tricky if your dog has an undiagnosed food allergy. It is important to know the symptoms of a food allergy so that you and your vet can begin to determine the problem ingredients.

Symptoms

A dog with allergies will most likely experience skin problems. Irritation from food allergies is extremely painful and may develop into hives. It is most common near the ears, paws, stomach, and tail.  Monitor your dog for excessive scratching, licking, or pulling at these locations or others. Fleas can also cause skin irritation, so make sure to check your itchy dog’s skin and fur for any insects or flea dirt.

A dog with dietary restrictions may also experience gastrointestinal problems such as chronic gas, vomiting, and diarrhea. These can indicate either a food allergy or intolerance. An allergy affects multiple organs and may have a variety of symptoms. Meanwhile, an intolerance is usually limited to gastrointestinal complications.

Some dogs may have an anaphylactic reaction to certain foods. This is a much more serious type of allergy that requires immediate veterinary care. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include difficulty breathing, shock, drooling, and difficulty controlling urine or bowel movements.

Causes of Allergic Reactions

Many dog owners may be puzzled by their furry friend’s sudden allergic reaction. Even dogs that have been eating the same food for some time may develop an allergy to one of the ingredients. This is because canine food allergies require a period of exposure to arise. A dog might not experience adverse symptoms immediately after trying a new food, but they can certainly develop with time.

The most common allergens for dogs are chicken, beef, and dairy. Less common allergens include wheat, corn, barley, oats, or rice.

The Elimination Diet

Veterinary trials for food allergies such as the skin and fur tests are infamously unreliable. Many pet owners are instead turning to the elimination diet. This diet begins with a one to three month period in which your dog only eats a simple-ingredient food that they have never tried before. After this, you would quickly switch back to the old food. If symptoms return, your dog likely has a food allergy! Ingredients are then introduced into the new diet in order to pinpoint what exact ingredient is causing an allergic reaction.

One major concern with the elimination diet is that simple-ingredient dog foods may lack the proper nutritional content that dogs need to survive. Talk to your vet about the elimination diet before attempting it at home.

Flea Treatment in the Summer

June 21, 2019 By //  by cnpadmin

Summer has arrived. As we prepare to enjoy these upcoming months of warmer weather, so do unwanted pests. The risk that fleas will become a major problem in your home increases drastically during the summer. However, there are many ways to prevent this from happening.

Faster Development in the Summertime

While fleas survive throughout the year, summer provides the optimal conditions for their breeding and spreading. Flea development from egg to adult depends on a certain level of humidity. Eggs cannot survive in low humidity, so humid summers provide the perfect atmosphere for fleas to breed. Fleas do not depend on temperature to reproduce, but warmer weather speeds up development. This makes it easier for a home’s flea problem to escalate into something much less manageable. It is especially important, in this case, to treat for fleas quickly and before the problem spirals out of control.

Over-the-Counter Treatments

The most popular type of flea treatment is over-the-counter medication such as Advantage or Frontline. However, many pet owners are finding that these medications only do half of the job. Their only purpose is to target fleas on the animal itself, and they therefore cannot rid the home of fleas. Fleas can survive without a host for 100 days, and new ones can easily enter a home after an old population has died out. Thus begins a vicious cycle of reapplication which can be potentially dangerous for your pet.

Additionally, over-the-counter medications have confusing and often misleading labels. Many contain ingredients that are potentially harmful to your pet, including essential oils and insecticides. These can have lasting harmful and even fatal effects on your pet. If you do choose to use over-the-counter medications, remember to read the label carefully and understand any risks involved.

Recommended Treatments

Home treatment begins at the host animal. Rather than opting for over-the-counter medication, consider using a flea collar. Flea collars slowly release their preventative ingredients from the collar to your pet’s skin and coat. Fleas that come into contact with these ingredients are immediately killed. Collars are especially effective because they are close to the eyes and face, where the majority of fleas gather. Collars across brands have some different factors, but it is always important to size them correctly. Seresto collars last 8 months and are heavily trusted by the staff at Claws N Paws.

However, a collar alone is not enough to fight a flea outbreak. As previously mentioned, fleas can survive quite a long time off of the host. Furthermore, their bites are painful to both animals and humans. Fleabusters Rx powder kills flea at the larval stage in your carpet. Its ingredients are much safer than common insecticides, and a little powder goes a long way.
