Hungry Hungry Kittens

December 25, 2020 By //  by Madison Scheafer Leave a Comment

While cats are fairly easy pets to care for, they may be more confusing at a younger stage in life. Kittens can be difficult to understand, and you may feel unprepared to feed your new furry friend. The right diet can ensure a healthy transition into adulthood. Thankfully, there are several ways to identify your specific kitten’s best possible diet.

Your Feeding Pattern

If you have owned a cat before, you may be used to the typical routine of one meal in the morning and one meal in the evening. This pattern is satisfying for adult cats, but kittens have different needs. Instead, kittens prefer to snack; they may want four smaller meals a day rather than two.

You may be inclined to give your kitten primarily dry food, but consider adding canned (wet) food to your schedule. Canned food is closer to a cat’s natural diet, and thus is important to your kitten’s healthy growth. If you are giving your kitten dry food, you should make two of their daily meals canned.

Ingredients Matter

Kittens grow a lot in a very short amount of time. Because of this, they have different nutritional needs than adult cats. Like adult cats, kitten diets should have a high fat content. However, to facilitate healthy growth, your kitten should get about 30% of their energy from proteins. Look for protein-based cat foods where meat is the first ingredient. Foods claiming “complete and balanced nutrition” mean that they have all the necessary vitamins and nutrients. This means that your kitten can survive on this food alone without supplementation. Until your cat’s first birthday, you will want foods specifically formulated for kittens.

A Little Something-Something

Many pet parents like to give their kittens extra treats, and kittens love to snack. It is generally okay to give your kitten cat treats, as long as they do not exceed 10% of their daily calorie intake. This means only a few treats per day.

Sometimes, cats enjoy table scraps, but take caution with these. Your favorite cartoon cats may love a saucer of milk, but your kitten may disagree. Milk causes diarrhea in older kittens, who have since weaning lost the enzyme to break down milk. Raw meats, eggs, or fish can contain harmful bacteria causing potentially fatal conditions. Cooked, unseasoned meats or eggs are the best thing to give your kitten under the table.

Your new best friend may be waiting at Claws N Paws Day Spa. We currently have two kittens up for adoption. Previously, these boys lived in a large foster home and have become closely acquainted with small and older children, other cats, dogs, and rabbits. Because they have grown up together, these brothers would love to find a home together. For more information, any inquiries, or to schedule a meeting, call us today at 714-962-1005.

Support Our Rescue

September 7, 2018 By //  by cnpadmin

Many people already know that Claws N Paws Day Spa is one of Orange County’s premier grooming salons. What you might not realize is that we also offer cats and kittens for adoption. These friendly felines are rescued, meaning that they do not come from breeders or puppy mills. Instead, they were found by us or brought to us because they did not have a family of their own.

Cat and Kitten Rescue is Expensive

Many of the kittens we receive must be bottle-fed. This is both time-consuming and expensive. Kitten formula can cost just as much, if not more than, human infant formula. Depending on the age of the kittens and the number we receive, we can go through quite a bit of formula in a short amount of time. Then we must also purchase litter and food for these kittens once they are weaned.

Our cats and kittens receive veterinary care. Frequently they are ill when they arrive and must be medicated before they can be adopted. Once they reach four months of age, all of our kittens are fully vaccinated and spayed or neutered. All of these costs come directly out of our pockets.

Donations are Always Appreciated

Donations are important to rescue groups of all shapes and sizes. Donations help pay for necessary supplies and medical treatment. They also make it possible for us to take in even more animals in need.

We encourage you to consider donating to our rescue. All of the cash donations we receive go directly towards the purchase of formula, litter, medical care, etc. We do not keep any of this money for ourselves nor do we pay our fosterers for their service.  We also accept kitten formula donations, towel and blanket donations, and cat and kitten food donations. Anything you can provide us with will be greatly appreciated.

Claws N Paws Day Spa offers pet grooming and cat and kitten adoptions from our full service pet salon in Fountain Valley, CA. Please stop by to schedule a grooming appointment or to visit our rescued cats and kittens.

Support Our Rescue – Shop At This N That Consignment!!support our rescue

You probably already know that Claws N Paws Day Spa offers pet grooming services in Orange County, CA. What you might not realize is that we also offer rescued cats and kittens for adoption. These felines come from a variety of different places. Some are given to us by their owners when they are unable to care for them anymore. Many others were found as newborns. We bottle-feed and socialize these babies until they are ready to find homes.

Cat and Kitten Rescue is Expensive

It’s expensive for us to rescue and care for abandoned animals. Cats require food, litter and medical care. Newborn kittens require formula as well. Kitten formula costs just as much, if not more, than human baby formula. While we do receive donations occasionally, most of the costs are paid for from our own pockets. With proper support, we can care for more animals.

Support Our Rescue

One of the easiest ways to support our rescue is by shopping at This N That Consignment Shop for your pet supplies. This N That is located just two doors down from our grooming salon. They offer brand new pet supplies such as carriers, collars, leashes, toys and more.

When you purchase pet supplies from This N That Consignment, 100% of the profits are given to our rescue. As an added bonus, This N That is offering 20% off your purchase of $20 or more during the month of June! There’s never been a better time to shop.

Of course, there are other ways you can support our rescue. Consider donating used blankets or towels. We also accept cat and kitten food, litter and toys. If you would prefer, we take cash donations as well. Anything you can offer us will help! When you donate towards our rescue you can rest assured that all donations go directly to our rescued cats and kittens.

When shopping for pet supplies this summer, consider checking This N That Consignment Shop first. You’ll love the fun and friendly atmosphere of the shop. You might also find something you can’t live without!

Why It’s a Good Idea to Consign Your Gently Used Items

Consignment is good for both you and the environment. For you, it keeps your closets full of only the things that you actually use and love. It simplifies your life and saves you time that would otherwise be spent maintaining your under-appreciated possessions. But perhaps the biggest benefit when you consign your gently used items is that it effectively turns your clutter into cash.

Consignment is basically recycling your gently used items. We all know that recycling is good for the planet. But what you might not realize is exactly how much recycling can help. For example, in Third World countries half of all pesticides are used on cotton fields. When you recycle just one gently used cotton outfit you help to save a full pound of chemical fertilizer and pesticide from ever being released into the soil, water and atmosphere.

Recycling is good for you, your family and your wallet. Recycling keeps your house free from clutter and frees up your time. Besides, it’s much easier to find exactly what you want every time if you don’t have to dig through piles of stuff.

Even though consigning your unloved items probably won’t make you rich, it will provide you with a welcome rebate on past purchases that turned out to be not so perfect. The money earned from consignment can then be used in the consignment shop on something that you really love.

Claws N Paws Day Spa has been taking care of Orange County’s dogs and cats since 2001. We offer full service pet grooming at our state of the art pet salon in Fountain Valley, California. It’s “Kitten Season”

June 26, 2015 By //  by cnpadmin

It’s “Kitten Season”

For rescue groups throughout Southern California summer is well known as “kitten season”. The warm summer months act as a catalyst, bringing intact females into heat every three weeks. In fact just one female cat can produce two litters of kittens between May and October. If you’ve ever visited an animal shelter or rescue center in June you can clearly see that they are overrun with kittens. Unfortunately most of the kittens born during kitten season are euthanized due to lack of space in the shelters. The mother cats don’t fare well either. Most people looking to adopt will gravitate towards the cute fluffy kittens, ignoring the mother cats and the other adult cats in the shelter. The sad truth is that euthanasia rates for cats in shelters raise significantly during the summer.

Concerned animal lovers can take a stand against the animal overpopulation problem during kitten season. Here are the top ways that you can help:

  • Spay or neuter your cat even if it never goes outside
  • Donate funds or supplies to your local cat rescue
  • If you know how, volunteer to bottle-feed homeless kittens for your local cat rescue
  • Volunteer to foster a litter of kittens or an adult cat during kitten season
  • Consider adopting your own cat
  • Support local businesses that support cat rescue efforts

Perhaps one of the best ways to help during kitten season is to spread the word about the importance of spaying and neutering cats. While some people believe that just one litter of kittens won’t cause much of a problem, one female cat and her offspring can quickly produce thousands of cats.

The Difference Between a Consignment Shop and a Thrift Shop

Most people don’t fully understand the difference between a consignment shop and a thrift shop. The major difference is that consignment shops get to choose the items that they consign and offer for sale. Many consignment shops will ask you to make an appointment to bring things in and will typically sort things by season. Consignment shop owners are extremely careful about what they take for consignment and will not accept items that are poor quality. Consignment shops pay you for your gently used items and will often offer you a tax credit for donating your unsold items to their shop. Consignment shops, when managed well, are a lovely place to visit and shop for quality, recycled items.

Thrift shops are often overloaded, disorderly and overwhelming to shop in. Because thrift shops only sell donated items they are not able to be as selective as a consignment shop. Thrift stores typically offer many different types of items for sale such as clothing, accessories, dishes, bakeware, books, games, furniture and more. Although thrift stores usually have good prices, their items are often not as good or long lasting as those purchased in a consignment shop.

One benefit of both thrift stores and consignment shops is that you can purchase green, recycled products. This is an excellent way to save money and help the environment at the same time.
