Items to Sell – And Not to Sell – At a Consignment Shop

Items to Sell – And Not to Sell – At a Consignment Shop

One easy way to make a little extra money is to sell your gently used items through a consignment store. Selling through consignment is much safer than selling through classified ads or through websites like Craigslist. With consignment you do not need to provide your email address and strangers never need to visit to your home. Additionally, the consignment shop handles all of the marketing for you.

Before you begin gathering your items to take to your local consignment shop, it’s important to know what items sell, and which ones do not.

~Best sellers

Upholstered items
Such as sofas, sectionals, sleeper sofas and comfortable chairs

Leather furniture
Such as leather sofas and chairs

Wooden furniture
Such as wooden dressers and bookshelves

Dining sets
Dining tables and chairs, especially contemporary ones, typically sell very well

Buffet tables

Mid-century modern furniture

Inexpensive, un-framed modern art
Such as large modern pieces on canvas

Contemporary lamps
Such as newer lamp styles with shades in good condition

Unique items
Including vintage pieces and garden tables

Accessories
The more interesting, the better

~Items that do not sell well

TV armoires

Rugs

Brass items

Figurines

China

If you want to guarantee that your items sell quickly, and for top dollar they must be cleaned well before you take them to a consignment shop. This step alone can boost an item’s price by as much as 25%. It’s also important to repair any broken hardware and touch up any scratches or dings. In order for the shop to set a fair price for your items you will want to gather as much information about them as you can. Helpful information includes when it was made and whether it is an original piece or a replica.

Beginners Guide to Consignment

Beginners Guide to Consignment

Not all second hand shops are created equal. In fact, there are four different types:

  • Consignment
  • Pawn
  • Classified
  • Thrift

The main differences between these types of stores come down to when you relinquish ownership of your physical possessions, when you are paid and whether or not someone helps you sell your items. Today let’s take a closer look at consignment.

Simply put, consignment is when a shop sells goods for an owner. The owner of the items keeps ownership of the goods until they sell. Once sold, the owner pays a small fee to the consignment shop in return for selling their items.

Consignment shops are locally owned businesses. The shop owner sets their own terms for how their consignments work. Typically, the items for sale will have an identification code on the tag to identify which account will get credit for the sale.

When you decide to sell your gently used items through a consignment shop you drop them off for either a thirty, sixty or ninety day cycle. If your items do not sell during the allotted time period, then the shop will either discount the items or ask you to pick them up.

There usually isn’t a lot of inventory in a consignment shop, meaning that the items being sold don’t have much competition. This makes consignment an excellent choice if you have high quality goods to sell. However, you should keep in mind that consignment shops only accept items that are in excellent condition.

Consignment shops offer a wide variety of high quality items for sale. They have a high turnover rate and there is always something new to see every time you visit.

Top Ten Reasons to Shop Second Hand

There are many reasons to shop second hand. Let’s take a closer look at the top ten!

  1. Recycling
Recycling is good for the environment. When you shop consignment you are recycling someone’s gently used goods. When you sell your gently used goods to a consignment shop you are helping keep those items out of our already too full landfills.
  2. Selection
The variety of items that you can find at a consignment shop far exceeds that of a traditional retail store.
  3. Self-Expression
Because of the unique selection at a consignment shop, you are able to create a look that fits your own unique style and personality.
  4. Convenience
Consignment shops are typically located near residential areas.

Shopping in a consignment shop provides you with a much better price-to-product ratio.
  7. Lower Prices
Most consignment shops offer quality merchandise at lower prices than other retail shops. Many consignment shops also have many items on sale.

Summer Pet Grooming Guide

July 22, 2015 By //  by cnpadmin

Summer Pet Grooming Guide

Regular grooming is essential all year round, but you might not realize that your pet needs a little more attention during the summer. The following will help your pet look and feel their best this summer.

Keep on brushing!

The wet winter weather can leave your pets coat tangled and dry. Once the weather warms up it’s time to give them a good long brushing. Be careful not to cause any irritation or pain, and never try to brush out mats. Cats and dogs tend to shed more during the summer. Regular brushing can help reduce the amount of fur that ends up all over you and your house. If you have a dog with a longer coat, consider using an undercoat brush to assist with shedding. By brushing your pet’s coat regularly throughout the entire shedding period you can ensure that they don’t ingest too much hair. This is especially beneficial for cats that are prone to pesky hairballs.

Trim their nails

Your pet’s paws take a lot of pounding, especially on hot pavements in the summer. Keep their feet healthy by checking their paws and claws regularly. Inspect for injuries such as splits or cracks in the pads of their feet. Applying a special paw balm can help heal minor injuries. Deep cuts should be seen by a veterinarian. Trim your pet’s nails at least once a month.

Treat for parasites

Parasites love the warmer weather. Check your pet’s skin and coat for fleas and ticks regularly. Ask your groomer about flea treatments at your next grooming appointment.

Bathe your pet

A good bath can help to remove any excess fur that your pet is carrying around. Use a gentle shampoo and be careful not to get any soap in your pet’s eyes. A trip to the groomer during the summer will ensure that your pet is well taken care of.

Remember their ears and teeth

Once your pet is clean and dry, clean their ears and check for ear mites. Consider giving their teeth a good brush, or have your groomer include this service with your pet’s bath.

Claws N Paws Day Spa offers quality grooming services for both dogs and cats in Fountain Valley, California. We also offer mobile pet grooming to all areas of Orange County. For more information, or to schedule a grooming appointment please call 714-962-1005.

Consignment 101

Consignment 101

Consignment is when a shop sells goods for the original owner. The owner of the consignment shop keeps ownership of the items until they are sold. The owner of the goods pays a small fee to the consignment shop in return for selling their gently used items.

Consignment shops are locally owned businesses. Each shop carries its own policies for consignment. It is important to research the shops policies before committing.

Typically you drop your gently used items at a consignment shop for a 30, 60 or 90 day period. If your item doesn’t sell within that time period, it might be discounted by the shop owner. When your items sell you will be charged a commission, which the shop collects as its profit. Most consignment shops will offer you more money for your items if you are willing to take in-store credit instead of cash. When you visit a consignment shop every item for sale items will generally have an identification code on the tag to identify the party that gets credit for the sale.

In recent years consignment shops have become extremely popular across the country. These small boutique type shops provide customers with fantastic deals on quality merchandise. In addition, they provide sellers with an outlet to showcase their gently used items and even make a profit from them. Consignment shops have continued to increase in popularity since the recession. Buyers everywhere love to search consignment shops for unique items at affordable prices and sellers are always looking to make some extra cash in any way possible. Consignment shops today are booming businesses with loyal customers on both ends of the spectrum.

Is Your Peanut Butter Safe For Your Dog?

July 15, 2015 By //  by cnpadmin

Is Your Peanut Butter Safe For Your Dog?

Many dogs enjoy peanut butter. At almost every pet supply store you can found several different peanut butter treats and snacks for dogs. In fact several people even make these treats in their own kitchen. Peanut butter is often used straight from the jar to get our dogs to swallow pills. However is your peanut butter really safe for your dog?

There is a new type of peanut butter on the market that is actually poisonous to dogs. This peanut butter contains a sweetener called Xylitol. Xylitol exists naturally in some fruits and vegetables. For people, Xylitol is an excellent substitute for sugar and its use results in fewer calories, less tooth decay and fewer problems for diabetics. Xylitol is commonly found in sugar-free gum, candies, toothpastes and baked goods. However xylitol is toxic to dogs even in very small amounts.

In low doses xylitol causes insulin release and low blood sugar in dogs. When blood sugar drops low enough dogs can experience seizures or fall into a coma. In slightly higher doses xylitol causes liver failure in dogs. Any amount of xylitol ingested by a dog should be considered dangerous. The dog must be hospitalized and given an infusion of sugar through IV and medications to protect their liver. Their sugar and liver must be constantly monitored for two to three days in order to detect any liver disease that might develop. If detected, liver failure is extremely difficult to treat.

Having your dog in the hospital for a few days with blood being drawn regularly is tough on both you and your dog. An ounce of prevention can go a very long way in protecting your dog from a potentially serious problem. Always read labels and educate yourself on which foods are safe for your dog. Many people don’t realize that foods such as grapes, macadamia nuts and bread dough are also toxic for their dogs. If you are unsure if something is safe, it’s probably best to avoid it.

At Claws N Paws Day Spa we care about the health and safety of your pets. We offer full service pet grooming in Fountain Valley, California. For more information or to schedule a grooming appointment, please call 714-962-1005.
