Save a Life: Adopt an Older Cat

February 2, 2018 By //  by cnpadmin

Save a Life: Adopt an Older Cat

When people think of adopting a new pet, they often picture an adorable puppy or kitten. Unfortunately, they rarely consider older cats. Adult cats watch while younger kittens come and go. Most of the time, potential adopters never even give them a second glance.

Older cats make wonderful pets. They’ve already passed the kitten phase, which can be tiring and troublesome. Older cats are less likely to attack your feet while you sleep or accidentally miss their litter box. They are typically very affectionate and extremely grateful to have a home. Let’s take a look at the top reasons you should consider adopting an adult cat.

You’ll Know Exactly What You’re Getting Yourself Into

When you adopt a kitten, you have no idea what they’ll be like when they grow up. Adult cats have already developed their personalities. What you see is what you get. You’ll know exactly how big they are, what they look like and what they like and don’t like.

Older Cats Fold Into the Household Better

Kittens can be too active for older pets in the home. They can even be a handful for children. Older cats are passed the point where they climb, chew and jump on objects and other living things in your household.

Older Cats Require Less Supervision

Kittens are constantly underfoot. When left alone, they can do a lot of damage. Older cats are more mellow and don’t tend to get into trouble. They’re also better at using the litter box. An older cat is the perfect choice for working families. They stay out of trouble throughout the day and are ready to cuddle when you get home.

You Might Be Their Last Chance At A Home

Older cats often sit for years in shelters and rescue facilities. Adopting an older cat gives them a chance at a good life. Adopters are their only opportunity at a life outside of a cage.

Claws N Paws has many wonderful cats looking for their forever home. Please consider adopting an adult cat. Call 714-962-1005 for more information.

Cat and Kitten Rescue – What To Do If You Find A Kitten

March 10, 2017 By //  by cnpadmin

Cat and Kitten Rescue – What To Do If You Find A Kitten

Spring is right around the corner and with it comes new life in many forms. This is when most people go outside to enjoy the warmer weather.  While strolling through the park or around your neighborhood you may see baby animals. You might even found one or more newborn kittens. If this sounds unlikely, you’d probably be surprised to know that this happens several times a year in Orange County. This is why kitten rescue exists. Many, if not all of the kittens we have for adoption were found by people just like you.

Is it alone?

If you find a newborn kitten you first need to find out if it’s alone. Most likely there will be more kittens close by. Look in the bushes or other areas around where you found the kitten. Mother cats will move their kittens to keep them safe. This is done one at a time. If you’ve found one, then she probably hasn’t had a chance to move the rest yet.

If at all possible, try to find the mother cat. If this is a house cat, then you can alert the cat’s owner who might not even know that their cat had kittens. If you are dealing with a feral cat, you should always try to trap it. Baby kittens stand the best chance of survival if they have their mother’s milk. If this is a feral situation, you will definitely want to talk with an experienced rescue group before attempting to handle this on your own. Live animal traps can be found at most feed shops.

When a Mothers care is not an option

Sometimes kittens are abandoned by their mother. This might be because the mom was young and inexperienced, she got scared away from her litter or because she decided that something was wrong with them. Unfortunately, sometimes these kittens are too sick to save, although most cat and kitten rescues will do all they can to save them.

If you find one or more abandoned kittens then you need to move fast. Newborn kittens dehydrate very quickly. Depending on their age, they must be fed a high quality kitten formula every one to three hours, both day and night. They must be burped, handled carefully and helped with elimination every time they are fed. They must be kept warm and safe, but not so much that they overheat.

If you or someone you know finds a kitten, please contact an experienced professional immediately for advice. Most veterinarians can offer suggestions on their care. Claws N Paws Day Spa offers pamphlets on the care and handling of newborn kittens. We have over 50 years of combined experience successfully bottle-feeding kittens. Please stop by for a pamphlet today.

Cat Adoptions

Cat Adoptionscat-adoptions

We have many wonderful cats and kittens looking for their forever homes! Please read on to learn more about our cat adoptions.

Bottle-fed kittens

Stray and abandoned newborn kittens are found all the time. These babies are helpless without human intervention. If a surrogate mother isn’t available, they must be bottle-fed around the clock. This includes waking up throughout the night, assisting them with elimination and keeping them warm and safe from harm. It’s a lot like taking care of a newborn child. Kitten formula even costs about the same as human formula.

Bottle-fed kittens are very comfortable around humans and can be extremely affectionate. When socialized from a young age, they can be taught to live with other pets and children. Bottle-fed kittens make wonderful pets.

Adult cats

Adult cats are frequently abandoned. The usual reasons include behavior problems, moving and allergies. However, with the right care and attention, all if these issues can be avoided or corrected. When adult cats are abandoned, they often become depressed and fearful of people and other pets. A rescue facility can work with these pets to correct any behavior issues and help them trust humans again. Once adopted, adult cats are often extremely affectionate and grateful to be loved.

Cats with special needs

Sometimes elderly and disabled cats are abandoned. This is an especially difficult situation. Elderly and disabled cats require a lot of love and attention. While rescue facilities can help these cats feel confident around humans, living in a permanent home is the most ideal situation for these feline friends. Elderly and disabled cats can make wonderful companions for those willing to give them a chance.

Donations always appreciated

Cat rescue facilities must pay for vet expenses, cat litter, cat food, medications and kitten formula out of pocket. These expenses add up quickly. If you can’t adopt but still wish to help, donations are always appreciated!

Adopt, don’t shop

Unfortunately, we only have room for so many cats and kittens. Once we are full, we must turn other needy pets away. When you adopt a rescued cat or kitten you not only help a deserving feline, you help other pets in need by making room for them.

Claws N Paws Day Spa has many wonderful rescued cats and kittens looking for their forever homes. Many of our kittens were bottle-fed and all of our adoptable cats and kittens have been socialized with cats and people. Please call 714-962-1005 for more information.

Orange County Cat Grooming you Can Trust

September 30, 2016 By //  by cnpadmin

Orange County Cat Grooming you Can TrustService with a smile!

Not many places in Orange County offer cat grooming. Occasionally a grooming shop will accept cats, but they attempt to treat them as if they were dogs. The problem with this approach is that cats require a much different grooming experience. For example, cats cannot be tethered, most dog shampoos are not safe for them, they are slow to trust and they become easily stressed. A cat that is stressed is more likely to hurt itself and those around it. Cats can also suffer from a variety of stress-related health issues.

The owner of Claws N Paws Day Spa has a long history with cats. She began rescuing stray cats and kittens as a child. As an adult, she has continued to rescue and rehabilitate cats and kittens. She received her grooming certification in 1997 and became a highly respected groomer in Orange County. However, she was unhappy working for a corporate retail store. This is because large, corporate shops tend to focus on their bottom line while small, independent grooming shops put more emphasis on the care of their clients. In April, 2001 she opened Claws N Paws Day Spa with a commitment to treat each pet individually in order to reduce stress and make the grooming process as comfortable as possible. That’s what we mean when we say “Grooming with a Loving Touch.”

A few years later, she opened Claws N Paws Cat Boarding next door. This facility offers stress-free boarding for cats. Individual rooms are specially designed for one or multiple cats. Dogs are never allowed in the boarding facility, making it a quiet, comfortable place for cats to relax while their pet parents are unable to be home. Food, water, exercise and human interaction is provided daily to ensure the mental and physical health of all of our feline guests. For more information about our cat only boarding, please click here.

Claws N Paws Day Spa also has many rescued cats and kittens looking for their forever home. Many available kittens have been bottle-fed and all pets for adoption are socialized. Younger kittens have received their first set of shots and older cats and kittens are spayed and neutered. These are different than any cat or kitten you will find at a pet shop. We understand cats and love each one like they were our own. To see our cats and kittens available for adoption, please click here.

Our commitment to cats is what sets us apart from other grooming shops. We have many happy and healthy feline clients. We know what cats need and we always treat them with the respect and specialized care that they deserve.

Please stop by and see why Orange County trusts us with their cats. For more information, or to schedule a grooming appointment, please call 714-962-1005.

Beginners Guide to Consignment

August 21, 2015 By //  by cnpadmin

This N That Consignment Supports Claws N Paws!

Beginners Guide to Consignment

Not all second hand shops are created equal. In fact, there are four different types:

  • Consignment
  • Pawn
  • Classified
  • Thrift

The main differences between these types of stores come down to when you relinquish ownership of your physical possessions, when you are paid and whether or not someone helps you sell your items. Today let’s take a closer look at consignment.

Simply put, consignment is when a shop sells goods for an owner. The owner of the items keeps ownership of the goods until they sell. Once sold, the owner pays a small fee to the consignment shop in return for selling their items.

Consignment shops are locally owned businesses. The shop owner sets their own terms for how their consignments work. Typically, the items for sale will have an identification code on the tag to identify which account will get credit for the sale.

When you decide to sell your gently used items through a consignment shop you drop them off for either a thirty, sixty or ninety day cycle. If your items do not sell during the allotted time period, then the shop will either discount the items or ask you to pick them up.

There usually isn’t a lot of inventory in a consignment shop, meaning that the items being sold don’t have much competition. This makes consignment an excellent choice if you have high quality goods to sell. However, you should keep in mind that consignment shops only accept items that are in excellent condition.

Consignment shops offer a wide variety of high quality items for sale. They have a high turnover rate and there is always something new to see every time you visit.

Claws N Paws Day Spa has been taking care of Orange County’s dogs and cats since 2001. We offer full service pet grooming at our state of the art pet salon in Fountain Valley, California.
