Professional Pet Grooming For New Pets

Professional Pet Grooming For New Pets

If you have a new puppy or kitten then you might be wondering when you can take them for professional pet grooming. Young pets, just like young children, can get into a lot of mischief and make quite a mess of themselves. Sometimes their fur doesn’t grow in exactly as you think it should, and you might be tempted to give them a trim to even it up. While it’s important to get your pet used to visiting the groomer, for the best results you will need to take it slow.

Vaccines Are Important

Puppies and kittens begin getting vaccines around 6 to 8 weeks of age. These first vaccines provide them with the protection needed to visit the groomer. After they’ve been vaccinated, consider bringing them to your local grooming salon so that they can get used to the sights, sounds and smells. This first visit shouldn’t include a bath or haircut. While you are visiting, you can schedule their first appointment for another day.

First Grooming Appointment

Your pet’s first grooming appointment will include a gentle bath, brush and nail trim. This is the perfect opportunity for your pet to get to know their groomer. The groomer will take it slow and only do what your pet will allow. Keep in mind that the first professional grooming sets the stage for how your pet responds to grooming in the future. An experienced groomer will never push too far during the first appointment to ensure that your pet doesn’t become fearful of the grooming process.

Future Grooming Appointments

After your pet has experienced a bath you can consider scheduling a haircut appointment. At each appointment your groomer will only do what your pet allows, so that they can continue to get used to the process. The first haircut will probably only include the feet, face and sanitary area. Later visits will include trims and breed cuts.

For Best Results You Must Stay Consistent

If you want your new pet to get used to the grooming process then you have to visit your groomer at least once a month. Although it might take some time, your new pet will soon adjust to being groomed. One day soon they might even be excited to visit the grooming salon!

Puppy’s First Grooming

Puppy’s First Grooming

Dogs require grooming their entire life. It’s important that their first grooming experience is a pleasant one so that they will not resist future grooming sessions. However, if you wait too long to take them for professional grooming it could lead to resistance and fear that can be difficult to overcome. Let’s discuss puppy’s first grooming.

Although young dogs are often nervous of the noise and activity of a grooming salon, they are more likely to become accepting of the experience in the future if they are exposed to it early. Check with your groomer to see at what age they will begin to see your puppy. Most grooming salons will allow them once they’ve received their second set of vaccinations.

Early exposure to the grooming experience should be carefully balanced with protecting your puppy from infectious diseases. Many groomers recommend waiting until your puppy is fully vaccinated before making their first grooming appointment. Typically, this is right around four months of age. They don’t usually need a full grooming treatment at this point, but it is the perfect time to get them used to the sights and sounds of the salon.

You can begin preparing your puppy for regular grooming when you first bring them home. Brush your puppy gently, pick up its feet and feel between its toes. Wipe the insides of its ears with a soft cloth and brush its teeth on a regular basis. Offer praise and treats during these sessions to keep the experience both positive and fun.

Your puppy’s first grooming session probably won’t include a full haircut. Instead it will be a shortened session that introduces your puppy to the groomer and the tools that are used in the grooming process. Your puppy will probably receive a gentle bath, with a nail trim, ear cleaning and a light trim of the face, feet and sanitary area. At each appointment the groomer will do a little bit more as your puppy gradually gets used to each procedure.

We hope that this information has been helpful as we strive to provide education on all aspects of pet care.

How Grooming Affects your Dog’s Behavior

March 27, 2015 By //  by cnpadmin

How Grooming Affects your Dog’s Behavior

Most people know that petting and stroking their dogs provides many physical and emotional benefits for humans. However, this nurturing interaction can benefit our dogs as well.

Dogs learn to enjoy touch only when they have the right experiences with it. Rough handling destroys a dog’s trust. Tentative handling can have the same effect. Puppies will often protest being touched. If you back off when these protests occur then you send the wrong message to the puppy. They will learn that the only way to communicate with people is by growling or biting. On the other hand, if you overreact and punish the puppy for protesting, then you can actually make the puppy more defensive.

A regular grooming schedule provides structure to a puppy’s experience of human touch. With the important task of grooming to get through you are more likely to hold steady when faced with a puppy protest. In order to help your puppy cooperate through the process of grooming, you will quickly learn ways to make the grooming process more comfortable for your puppy. This brings balance into your interactions, leading to a number of benefits.

In order to maintain a healthy relationship with your dog, regular touch is necessary. While it’s easy to cuddle and pet a clean dog several times a day, it’s not so easy if you must go and clean yourself up every time. This is one of the reasons that regular grooming is so important to your relationship with your dog. When dogs have tangles and mats, they often have skin sores hidden beneath the mats. These sores hurt, making the dog fearful of being touched. However, because the sores are hidden, their family members do not realize why the dog resents being touched.

Families with long-haired dogs should know right from the start that professional grooming will be required. The training provided by a skilled groomer can be extremely beneficial. For best results, find a good groomer and stick with them. Shopping around for the best price for dog grooming can negatively affect how your dog handles the grooming process. Dogs who visit the groomer regularly tend to enjoy the experience while dogs that are not taken often enough can find the experience painful and scary.

Short haired dogs require regular grooming as well to distribute skin oils throughout their coat, keep their nails trimmed and to remove loose hairs. Families that groom their dogs regularly have healthier dogs because they are able to detect problems much sooner, while they are much easier to treat.

Puppy’s First Groom

Puppy’s First Groompuppy

If you have a new puppy then you are probably wondering what you should do about grooming. Even a very small puppy can be introduced to the grooming process. Begin your puppy’s first grooming session about twenty to thirty minutes after a meal. This is when your puppy should be calmer and even a little sleepy. Use a soft brush or comb to gently brush your puppy’s fur. Don’t be surprised if your puppy wiggles around while you brush him. Remember, this is a new experience for your puppy. Slow your hand motions down and when he settles down, praise him and take a small break. While you brush your pet, gently handle its feet, toes, ears and tail areas. This will help your puppy learn to accept this type of handling and will make professional grooming less stressful for him later.

Once your puppy has received its second set of immunizations it is time to schedule his first grooming appointment. Most professional groomers will require that your pet has had their shots before grooming. This is for the safety of both your pet and the other pets that are visiting the groomer. Remember, the younger that your dog is when it receives its first professional grooming, the easier it will be for everyone involved.

Consider scheduling your first few grooming appointments two to three weeks apart and then slowly begin to lengthen the time between appointments. If you get your puppy acquainted with the grooming salon at a young age then grooming will be much easier on him in the long run. The strange sights and sounds of new places can cause a lot of anxiety for dogs, and the younger they experience something, the better. Being professionally groomed entails a lot of contact from an unfamiliar person, but an early start will make it almost second nature to your dog. Just remember to always reward your puppy with a treat immediately after his grooming appointment to establish a pleasant association.

On your puppy’s first visit your groomer will likely only bathe, brush and trim your puppy’s face, feet and rear. Most groomers will not do a full haircut on a puppy’s first visit as it can be too much for the pet to comfortably accept.

Claws N Paws Day Spa has many years of experience grooming puppies. We understand that visiting a grooming salon can be stressful for puppies and we will do everything that we can to make it a pleasant experience for them_.
