Why It’s a Good Idea to Consign Your Gently Used Items

Consignment is good for both you and the environment. For you, it keeps your closets full of only the things that you actually use and love. It simplifies your life and saves you time that would otherwise be spent maintaining your under-appreciated possessions. But perhaps the biggest benefit when you consign your gently used items is that it effectively turns your clutter into cash.

Consignment is basically recycling your gently used items. We all know that recycling is good for the planet. But what you might not realize is exactly how much recycling can help. For example, in Third World countries half of all pesticides are used on cotton fields. When you recycle just one gently used cotton outfit you help to save a full pound of chemical fertilizer and pesticide from ever being released into the soil, water and atmosphere.

Recycling is good for you, your family and your wallet. Recycling keeps your house free from clutter and frees up your time. Besides, it’s much easier to find exactly what you want every time if you don’t have to dig through piles of stuff.

Even though consigning your unloved items probably won’t make you rich, it will provide you with a welcome rebate on past purchases that turned out to be not so perfect. The money earned from consignment can then be used in the consignment shop on something that you really love.

Is Your Dog’s Disease Linked to Their Food?

June 17, 2015 By //  by cnpadmin

Is Your Dog’s Disease Linked to Their Food?

Many illnesses can be traced back to your pet’s food. Low quality pet food encourages infestations of insects, mites and molds, leading to chronic allergies. However, grain mites that feed on poor quality feed grains can quickly combine with insects to create a far bigger issue for your dog. These mites can pick up and spread the spores of extremely dangerous molds that are capable of producing some of the world’s deadliest natural toxins.

Molds are members of the fungi family. Unlike other fungi such as mushrooms, molds are invisible to the naked eye. They reproduce by creating small, seed-like particles known as spores. Because molds and mold spores are microscopic, they can spread easily by traveling on the small bodies of mites and weevils. When this occurs it doesn’t take very long for an entire bag of grain to become contaminated.

Just like humans, dogs can be allergic to the molds and mold spores commonly found in pet foods. However, the greatest danger lies in the potential for ingestion of the poisons produced by these molds. Symptoms of mold poisoning can include:

  • Fever
  • Jaundice or yellowing of the skin and eyes
  • Dark colored urine
  • Persistent violent bouts of vomiting
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Death

Even small amounts of the mold can accumulate in a dog’s liver, causing cancer to develop over time. Once the mold enters the liver there is no antidote and no known cure. Any amount of mold in your pet food should be considered unsafe. Every single time you choose to feed your dog commercial pet food made with cheap, low quality cereal grains you are putting them in danger.

In order to protect your dog from these potential dangers you must never buy cheaply-made dog food and avoid dog foods that contain grain by-products or mill waste. Dog food ingredients are often the most overlooked cause of serious disease in healthy dogs. Don’t allow your dog to become one of the ones affected.

This N That Consignment Shop Supports Claws N Paws

What is a Consignment Shop?

Individuals bring their unwanted items to a consignment shop so that the shop owner can sell the items for them. Whenever an item is sold, the sale price is split between the owner of the consignment shop and the owner of the item. This benefits the shop owner because they do not need to pay upfront for their merchandise. It benefits the owner of the merchandise by allowing them to get rid of unwanted items and make some extra money in the process. The consignment shop owner typically retains a higher percentage of the sale price in order to cover their business expenses.

While some consignment shops take a wide variety of items, others are more specialized. Books, antiques and furniture are all popular consignment items. Consignment shops create the ability for consumers to purchase things that they might not be able to afford brand new.

When someone is looking to sell their items through consignment there are some things that they will want to look for in a consignment store. First, the shop should be in a good location. Shops located off a major street will typically attract the most attention. The shop should be well organized and the owner should be friendly and knowledgeable. Check with the shop owner about their policies regarding percentage splits and how long they keep items.

Most consignment shops will only take items that are clean and in good condition. Jewelry and shoes should be free from damage and polished before being brought to the consignment shop. Toys must be spotless, and furniture should be well maintained. Items that are not in good condition typically are not eligible for sale in a consignment shop.

Handling Aggressive Dogs

June 10, 2015 By //  by cnpadmin

Handling Aggressive Dogs

As a pet groomer, people often ask us how we handle aggressive dogs. Although extremely aggressive dogs WILL be turned away for both their own safety and the safety of our groomers, we often encounter dogs that bite. Typically dogs bite while being groomed because they are afraid. Expediting the grooming process is usually the best way to keep frightened dogs calm.

An experienced groomer will attempt to make their canine clients feel comfortable before beginning to groom them. The groomer might offer frightened dogs a treat and speak to them in a soft voice while giving them a little love. Once the dog is more comfortable they will be placed in the tub for a bath. Once in the tub, even aggressive dogs should allow the groomer to bathe them.

After the bath, the dog will be dried before it is moved to the grooming table. Dogs are restrained with a loop and a muzzle when necessary. Neither of these items hurt the dog. They are simply used to ensure the safety of both the dog and the groomer. When needed, the dog will be clipped quickly while being talked to calmly. The nails will be trimmed and the ears cleaned, possibly with the help of another groomer. After the grooming process is complete the dog will be calmed with more treats, kind words and lots of affection.

Sometimes pet parents consider giving sedatives to their dogs before grooming. Please talk to your veterinarian and groomer before doing so. Many groomers do not accept animals that have been sedated. If you are worried about your dog biting their groomer, it is important to discuss this matter with the groomer before scheduling your first grooming appointment. Most professional groomers understand that baths and haircuts are stressful on even the most well behaved dogs.

Claws N Paws Day Spa offers dog and cat grooming in Fountain Valley, California. Chain Stores VS Sole Proprietor Groom Shops

June 3, 2015 By //  by cnpadmin

Chain Stores VS Sole Proprietor Groom Shops

When it comes to grooming your pets you have many options. You could attempt to do it yourself, you can take them to one of the many large chain stores for grooming, or you could visit your neighborhood sole proprietor groom shop. Let’s take a closer look at chain stores VS sole proprietor groom shops.

At most chain stores, your pet will have a different groomer each time they visit. This can cause a multitude of problems. One issue is that if your pet has had grooming problems in the past, the new groomer might not be aware of these problems. Therefore they will not be able to work with your pet to help them overcome certain fears they might have about the grooming process. This is just one of the many reasons why most people prefer to take their pets to small, privately owned grooming shops.

Large pet stores typically require little to no training to be hired. While most chain stores will start new hires as brushers/bathers, an untrained person in this position can still cause serious harm to pets. For example, using the wrong type of brush can easily cause brush burns and the wrong drying tool or method can be fatal.

Many small grooming shops will allow you to stay while your pet is being groomed and they will never use cage dryers. Most independent groomers will also listen to what you want. This is not the type of individualized service that you can expect from a large chain store.

Most groomers and pet parents agree that smaller grooming shops are better than large chain stores in terms of service, quality and pet care. However, it is always a good idea to talk to the groomer, inspect the shop and make sure that you are comfortable before you leave your pet for grooming. Consider visiting the grooming salon with your pet before you even schedule your first grooming appointment.

Rescue Goes Hand in Hand With Pet Related Businesses

May 29, 2015 By //  by cnpadmin

Rescue Goes Hand in Hand With Pet Related Businessesconsignment rescue efforts

You probably already know that pet shops that host animal adoptions are far better than those that sell pets for profit. This is because most of the pets sold in pet stores come from inhumane puppy and kitten mills. However, other pet related businesses can also work with pet rescues to benefit both their individual profits as well as the efforts put forth by the rescue group.

As more and more cities are banning the sale of live pets in pet shops, more people are turning to rescue groups to find their animal companions. Rescue groups need as many outlets as possible to showcase their available pets. Pet related businesses are able to provide that outlet.

When pet related businesses and pet rescues partner together they create a mutual working relationship. Pet related businesses looking to partner with rescue groups should look for groups that are well-organized, offer ongoing support when needed and are able to expedite the adoption process. This is extremely important as one of the main complaints about adopting from pet rescues is that the adoption process takes too long. When there is a significant hold up, potential adopters are more likely to change their mind.

When businesses that sell pet supplies partner with rescue groups they might give a portion or all of the profits of those sales back to the rescue. Funding is an extremely important part of keeping an animal rescue running. Without proper funding, animals cannot be fed, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, or properly cared for. Supporting small businesses that help pet rescue is an excellent way for consumers to get involved with the rescue of domestic pets.
