Autumn Shedding

September 18, 2015 By //  by cnpadmin

Autumn Shedding

As summer turns to autumn pet parents tend to notice more hair accumulating on their carpets, clothing and furniture. This seasonal shedding is not actually triggered by the heat, but rather by the shortening length of day. As the sun sets earlier and earlier, it triggers the animal’s coat to begin the shedding process. This type of extreme shedding happens in both the spring and the autumn. Autumn shedding occurs when the winter coat grows in, pushing out the summer coat. While pet parents cannot completely stop this process from happening they can significantly reduce the amount of hair with regular grooming.

When a pet begins its seasonal shedding process you will probably notice some tufting in the animal’s coat. These are tufts of dead hair that have become trapped in the coat. This hair must be brushed or raked out to avoid any discomfort or matting.

Regular grooming during shedding helps the coat perform its job more effectively. A pet’s coat acts as an insulator against extreme temperatures. It must be free from dead hair in order to do this properly. There are several tools available that can help remove the dead hair and reduce shedding. When using any de-shedding tool it is important to remove all mats before beginning, move in the direction of the coat and avoid using the tool in one area for a prolonged period of time. This is important because it is extremely easy to burn or scrape the skin while de-shedding.

Most people believe that shaving their pet will reduce shedding. However, doing so just causes the dead hair to come out shorter. These shorter hairs easily get stuck in the skin, much like a splinter. Additionally, without their coat, a pet loses their natural insulating abilities.

A professional groomer understands the proper techniques and have the right tools needed for de-shedding. Regular grooming is the best defense against seasonal shedding. Professional grooming is also an excellent way to find problems caused by seasonal allergies and parasites that are common at this time of year.

Common Dental Problems in Pets

September 11, 2015 By //  by cnpadmin

Common Dental Problems in Pets

Today, dental disease is one of the most common diseases diagnosed by veterinarians. Dental disease can affect both dogs and cats at any age. Most pets have some degree of dental disease by the time they are three years old. Fortunately, proper oral care can prevent most forms of dental disease.

Tartar and calculi appears as tan or brown colored deposits on your pet’s teeth. When plaque and tartar are allowed to build up, it affects both the tooth and the tissue surrounding it. As the pet’s dental disease progresses, periodontal disease begins, affecting the tissues around the teeth. One of the first changes to occur is an inflammation of the gums known as gingivitis.

Unfortunately, most of the damage done by dental disease occurs below the gum line where pet parents are unable to see. Toothaches can occur in pets just as they do in humans. In fact, the pain can be so severe that the pet might stop eating and begin to lose weight. Besides causing pain, dental disease can cause serious systemic illnesses such as kidney disease and heart disease.

Retained baby teeth are often seen in small breed dogs. If the baby teeth do not fall out normally and are allowed to remain in a dog’s mouth, they can cause severe overcrowding, making it impossible for the permanent teeth to erupt properly.

A condition that frequently affects cats is stomatitis which is an inflammation of the pet’s oral mucous membranes. Stomatitis can affect wide portions of the mouth and can cause a pet a lot of pain.

Proper oral care begins with regular brushing of your pet’s teeth. Be sure to have your pet’s teeth brushed every time they receive professional grooming. Your groomer knows the proper kind of toothpaste and toothbrush to use.

One of the first signs of dental disease in pets is bad breath. If you notice bad breath or tarter buildup it’s time to see your veterinarian. They will be able to examine your pet’s mouth and determine what type of treatment is necessary.

Items to Sell – And Not to Sell – At a Consignment Shop

Items to Sell – And Not to Sell – At a Consignment Shop

One easy way to make a little extra money is to sell your gently used items through a consignment store. Selling through consignment is much safer than selling through classified ads or through websites like Craigslist. With consignment you do not need to provide your email address and strangers never need to visit to your home. Additionally, the consignment shop handles all of the marketing for you.

Before you begin gathering your items to take to your local consignment shop, it’s important to know what items sell, and which ones do not.

~Best sellers

Upholstered items
Such as sofas, sectionals, sleeper sofas and comfortable chairs

Leather furniture
Such as leather sofas and chairs

Wooden furniture
Such as wooden dressers and bookshelves

Dining sets
Dining tables and chairs, especially contemporary ones, typically sell very well

Buffet tables

Mid-century modern furniture

Inexpensive, un-framed modern art
Such as large modern pieces on canvas

Contemporary lamps
Such as newer lamp styles with shades in good condition

Unique items
Including vintage pieces and garden tables

Accessories
The more interesting, the better

~Items that do not sell well

TV armoires

Rugs

Brass items

Figurines

China

If you want to guarantee that your items sell quickly, and for top dollar they must be cleaned well before you take them to a consignment shop. This step alone can boost an item’s price by as much as 25%. It’s also important to repair any broken hardware and touch up any scratches or dings. In order for the shop to set a fair price for your items you will want to gather as much information about them as you can. Helpful information includes when it was made and whether it is an original piece or a replica.

Beginners Guide to Consignment

Beginners Guide to Consignment

Not all second hand shops are created equal. In fact, there are four different types:

  • Consignment
  • Pawn
  • Classified
  • Thrift

The main differences between these types of stores come down to when you relinquish ownership of your physical possessions, when you are paid and whether or not someone helps you sell your items. Today let’s take a closer look at consignment.

Simply put, consignment is when a shop sells goods for an owner. The owner of the items keeps ownership of the goods until they sell. Once sold, the owner pays a small fee to the consignment shop in return for selling their items.

Consignment shops are locally owned businesses. The shop owner sets their own terms for how their consignments work. Typically, the items for sale will have an identification code on the tag to identify which account will get credit for the sale.

When you decide to sell your gently used items through a consignment shop you drop them off for either a thirty, sixty or ninety day cycle. If your items do not sell during the allotted time period, then the shop will either discount the items or ask you to pick them up.

There usually isn’t a lot of inventory in a consignment shop, meaning that the items being sold don’t have much competition. This makes consignment an excellent choice if you have high quality goods to sell. However, you should keep in mind that consignment shops only accept items that are in excellent condition.

Consignment shops offer a wide variety of high quality items for sale. They have a high turnover rate and there is always something new to see every time you visit.

Can My Pet Eat That?

August 19, 2015 By //  by cnpadmin

Can My Pet Eat That?

Many of the foods that are considered good for people can be extremely dangerous for pets. While you might be tempted to offer table scraps to your pet, you should always avoid the following foods:

Alcoholic beverages

Apple seeds

Apricot pits

Avocados

Cherry pits

Candy (particularly chocolate and any candy containing Xylitol)

Coffee

Garlic

Grapes

Chewing gum

Hops

Macadamia nuts

Moldy food

Mushroom plants

Mustard seeds

Onions and onion powder

Peach pits

Potato leaves and stems

Raisins

Rhubarb leaves

Salt

Tea

Tomato leaves and stems

Walnuts

Xylitol (artificial sweetener)

Yeast dough

In addition, raw meat and raw eggs can contain bacteria that can be harmful to both humans and pets. Raw eggs contain an enzyme that decreases the absorption of biotin, which can lead to skin and coat problems. While feeding your pet raw bones might seem like a natural and healthy thing to do, however domestic pets can choke on bones or sustain serious injuries from bone splinters that become lodged in the digestive tract.

Many plants, household chemicals and prescription drugs are also toxic to pets. You should always keep these items out of reach of your pet.

Please be aware that this is not an exhaustive list. Any decision to feed your pet food that is not intended for animals should be discussed with your veterinarian.

If your pet has consumed something that you believe to be poisonous, you will need to act fast. Remove your pet from the area and check to make sure that they are breathing and acting normally. Never induce vomiting or give any home remedies without first speaking to your veterinarian or the Pet Poison helpline. The Pet Poison Helpline can be reached at 1-800-213-6680.

Remember that the prognosis for your pet is always better when the toxicity is reported immediately, so never wait to see if your pet becomes ill before calling for help. It is always safer and less expensive to call for help immediately.

We hope this information has been helpful as we strive to provide education on all aspects of pet care.

Embracing Consignment

Embracing Consignment

The recent downturn of the economy has left most people looking for creative ways to stretch their money. The good news is that you can still purchase quality high-end items on a budget when you shop consignment.

A consignment shop is a store that sells gently used merchandise at a discounted rate. However, consignment stores shouldn’t be confused with thrift stores. Thrift stores sell donated items with nothing given back to the person who donates. Consignment stores actually split their profits with the people that provide the items that they sell. While the items at consignment shops are second hand, they are usually in much better condition than what you would find at a thrift store. In fact most consignment shops will only accept items that are in very good to excellent condition.

Consignment shops offer a variety of different items. Because everything is priced so reasonably, you are able to get a lot more for your money. When you shop consignment you might be able to find everything from antiques and collectibles to modern art.

If you would like to get even more out of your money, you should consider selling your gently used items to your favorite consignment shop. This is an excellent way to get rid of your unwanted things and make a little extra money at the same time. Make sure that the items you wish to sell are clean, free from tears and in good condition. Shopping consignment is an excellent way to save money and make money at the same time.
