Heartworms Pose a Very Real Threat to Your Pet

April 26, 2019 By //  by cnpadmin

Our pets bring us so much joy. It’s only natural to want to protect them. That’s why it’s so important to learn about potential threats and what you can do to prevent them.

Heartworm disease is one of the most serious threats facing our pets. Heartworms can cause lung disease, heart failure, organ damage, and death in both dogs and cats.

Caused by the parasitic worm, Dirofilaria immitis, heartworm disease is spread through the bite of a mosquito. It is not spread from animal to animal like most other diseases. Coyotes, ferrets, sea lions, seals, and other animals can all become infected. If a mosquito bites an infected animal then bites your pet, it too will become infected.

Until recently, heartworm disease has not been a problem in Southern California. However, recent building development and irrigation system improvements have allowed mosquitos to survive.

Three new species of drought-resistant mosquitoes have been found in Southern California. All three types have spread heartworm disease in other countries. Pet owners need to be aware of the potential threat these mosquitoes pose to our pets. It’s important to do all you can to protect your pet from possible infection.

Mosquito Control

Preventing mosquitoes helps protect your pet against infection. Check your yard for standing water, which provides the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Empty containers regularly including pet drinking bowls and bird baths. It doesn’t take much water for mosquitoes to reproduce. In fact, they can breed in a bottle cap full of water.

Don’t Leave Food Out

Leaving food outside invites wild animals into your yard. In addition to potentially harming your pet, infected wild animals on your property increases the chance of infection.

Have Your Pet Checked Regularly

Most heartworm infections go undiagnosed until it’s too late. Your veterinarian can help determine your pet’s risk. There are heartworm preventative programs to help protect your pet against infection. Your veterinarian can provide you with more information regarding diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of heartworm disease.

Support Our Rescue

September 7, 2018 By //  by cnpadmin

Many people already know that Claws N Paws Day Spa is one of Orange County’s premier grooming salons. What you might not realize is that we also offer cats and kittens for adoption. These friendly felines are rescued, meaning that they do not come from breeders or puppy mills. Instead, they were found by us or brought to us because they did not have a family of their own.

Cat and Kitten Rescue is Expensive

Many of the kittens we receive must be bottle-fed. This is both time-consuming and expensive. Kitten formula can cost just as much, if not more than, human infant formula. Depending on the age of the kittens and the number we receive, we can go through quite a bit of formula in a short amount of time. Then we must also purchase litter and food for these kittens once they are weaned.

Our cats and kittens receive veterinary care. Frequently they are ill when they arrive and must be medicated before they can be adopted. Once they reach four months of age, all of our kittens are fully vaccinated and spayed or neutered. All of these costs come directly out of our pockets.

Donations are Always Appreciated

Donations are important to rescue groups of all shapes and sizes. Donations help pay for necessary supplies and medical treatment. They also make it possible for us to take in even more animals in need.

We encourage you to consider donating to our rescue. All of the cash donations we receive go directly towards the purchase of formula, litter, medical care, etc. We do not keep any of this money for ourselves nor do we pay our fosterers for their service.  We also accept kitten formula donations, towel and blanket donations, and cat and kitten food donations. Anything you can provide us with will be greatly appreciated.

Claws N Paws Day Spa offers pet grooming and cat and kitten adoptions from our full service pet salon in Fountain Valley, CA. Please stop by to schedule a grooming appointment or to visit our rescued cats and kittens.

Helping your Local Animal Rescue

April 1, 2016 By //  by cnpadmin

Helping your Local Animal Rescue

Every year, local animal rescues help hundreds to thousands of animals and people, usually with very limited resources and publicity. Helping your local animal rescue isn’t difficult. Try any (or all) of the following:

  1. Tell your friends and family about your local animal rescue. Most rescues rely solely on word of mouth. Consider sharing the organization’s information on social media websites.
  2. Get to know your local rescue groups. Stop in to visit the people that are responsible for caring for the animals.
  3. Before adopting from your local rescue, research what to expect. You’ll be far less likely to become frustrated if you fully understand the challenges and rewards of adopting a pet.
  4. Take a moment to thank the people who work at your local animal rescue. If you’ve adopted a pet from them, show them how well your pet is doing by sharing an updated picture with them in person or on their Facebook page.
  5. Consider making toys for the animals at the rescue using fabric, yarn and recyclables.
  6. Follow your local animal rescue on Facebook and other social media websites.
  7. Donate supplies to your local animal rescue. Rescue groups always need towels, blankets, toys, cat litter and other supplies. Visit or call the rescue to find out exactly what they need. Cash donations are typically welcome as well.
  8. Consider volunteering at your local animal rescue.
  9. Perhaps the best thing that you can do to help your local animal rescue is to make sure that your pets are spayed and neutered and have proper ID at all times. Cats should always be kept indoors and dogs should be kept on a leash while away from home.

Top Ten Reasons to Shop Second Hand

This N That Consignment Supports Claws N Paws!

Top Ten Reasons to Shop Second Hand

There are many reasons to shop second hand. Let’s take a closer look at the top ten!

  1. Recycling
Recycling is good for the environment. When you shop consignment you are recycling someone’s gently used goods. When you sell your gently used goods to a consignment shop you are helping keep those items out of our already too full landfills.
  2. Selection
The variety of items that you can find at a consignment shop far exceeds that of a traditional retail store.
  3. Self-Expression
Because of the unique selection at a consignment shop, you are able to create a look that fits your own unique style and personality.
  4. Convenience
Consignment shops are typically located near residential areas.
  5. Individualized Service
Most consignment shops are locally owned. They provide a warm, inviting atmosphere. If you are looking for something in particular you can usually find someone who is ready and willing to help you. You would be hard pressed to find this type of service at a large retail shop.
  6. Value
Shopping in a consignment shop provides you with a much better price-to-product ratio.
  7. Lower Prices
Most consignment shops offer quality merchandise at lower prices than other retail shops. Many consignment shops also have many items on sale.
  8. Brand Names
Most consignment shops offer brand name products for re-sale.
  9. New Products Added Regularly
Consignment shops often have new items for sale each time you visit.
  10. Exciting Way To Shop
Shopping at a consignment shop allows you to have more fun as you search for the perfect item.

Consignment 101

Consignment 101

Consignment is when a shop sells goods for the original owner. The owner of the consignment shop keeps ownership of the items until they are sold. The owner of the goods pays a small fee to the consignment shop in return for selling their gently used items.

Consignment shops are locally owned businesses. Each shop carries its own policies for consignment. It is important to research the shops policies before committing.

Typically you drop your gently used items at a consignment shop for a 30, 60 or 90 day period. If your item doesn’t sell within that time period, it might be discounted by the shop owner. When your items sell you will be charged a commission, which the shop collects as its profit. Most consignment shops will offer you more money for your items if you are willing to take in-store credit instead of cash. When you visit a consignment shop every item for sale items will generally have an identification code on the tag to identify the party that gets credit for the sale.

In recent years consignment shops have become extremely popular across the country. These small boutique type shops provide customers with fantastic deals on quality merchandise. In addition, they provide sellers with an outlet to showcase their gently used items and even make a profit from them. Consignment shops have continued to increase in popularity since the recession. Buyers everywhere love to search consignment shops for unique items at affordable prices and sellers are always looking to make some extra cash in any way possible. Consignment shops today are booming businesses with loyal customers on both ends of the spectrum.

The Difference Between a Consignment Shop and a Thrift Shop

Most people don’t fully understand the difference between a consignment shop and a thrift shop. The major difference is that consignment shops get to choose the items that they consign and offer for sale. Many consignment shops will ask you to make an appointment to bring things in and will typically sort things by season. Consignment shop owners are extremely careful about what they take for consignment and will not accept items that are poor quality. Consignment shops pay you for your gently used items and will often offer you a tax credit for donating your unsold items to their shop. Consignment shops, when managed well, are a lovely place to visit and shop for quality, recycled items.

Thrift shops are often overloaded, disorderly and overwhelming to shop in. Because thrift shops only sell donated items they are not able to be as selective as a consignment shop. Thrift stores typically offer many different types of items for sale such as clothing, accessories, dishes, bakeware, books, games, furniture and more. Although thrift stores usually have good prices, their items are often not as good or long lasting as those purchased in a consignment shop.

One benefit of both thrift stores and consignment shops is that you can purchase green, recycled products. This is an excellent way to save money and help the environment at the same time.
